Within the last several years, the government has introduced a few significant changes relating to how new HGV drivers are tested. Most of the changes are directly linked to the Driver CPC scheme that started to be implemented in 2013. The testing system we are now under implements the same types of testing procedures and information as the old system, but with modifications made to ensure that UK testing standards are in line with those practiced throughout the European Union.
The HGV Training Centre has made it a point to stay abreast of the changes in order to ensure our drivers are more than prepared to take and pass their tests. The first of those tests is known as the HGV theory test. This test used to be a simple, two-part multiple-choice exam that tested the candidate’s knowledge of highway safety and hazard avoidance. It is now a bit more involved as a result of the changes.
With Driver CPC now the standard across Europe, the UK revamped its testing procedure and gave it a new name. The entire testing process, from start to finish, is known as the Driver CPC Test. It is divided into four separate tests in terms of official designation. However, the practical implementation boils down to a two-part HGV theory test and a two-part practical skills test. An independent case study test is required for CPC certification.
The HGV theory test is composed of two separate components. Those components are:
The student driver may not proceed to practical skills training until he or she first passes the HGV theory test. The candidate must also have a provisional entitlement to begin training. The staff at the HGV Training Centre can provide further details about these requirements when you contact us.
We believe the best way to ensure that you will pass the HGV theory test the first time is to prepare in advance. You can prepare by yourself or utilise our software and training classes. You should know that some 92% of our students pass the theory test the first time they take it. How do we achieve such high success rates? By concentrating on effective preparation techniques.
For example, the concept of ‘practice makes perfect’ very much applies to the HGV theory test. We encourage our students to practice, practice more and then finish off with additional practice. The more often they take practice tests, the more prepared they will be for the real thing.
Practice helps in a number of ways:
Future HGV drivers who sign up with the HGV Training Centre are given state-of-the-art software that enables them to practice the HGV theory test as often as they like. Those who choose to prepare by themselves have plenty of online resources they can use to practice. There are websites and smartphone apps with thousands of practice questions.
We like to think of ourselves as a company offering a total training solution. What do we mean by this? We mean that we are always at the ready to provide our students with all of the help and advice they need. Where the HGV theory test is concerned, we do not just hand our students a manual and leave them to fend for themselves. Our professional instructors are always ready with answers to questions and helpful advice on test-taking methods.
Our students find that our commitment to help and advice extends all the way through our training programmes. From the moment a student begins preparing for the HGV theory test to that moment when he or she holds his/her new licence in hand, the instructor is at his/her side. We are committed to such highly personal service because we know it works.
Even after training is complete, we advise our drivers in their job search. We offer a comprehensive jobs database covering open positions throughout the UK. We also offer job placement assistance to get our new drivers placed as quickly as possible. Very few training companies in the UK offer the kind of comprehensive assistance we provide.
The last thing we want you to know is that you can train to be an HGV driver in a matter of months, not years. HGV training is not university. It does not require 2 to 4 years of your life plus tens of thousands of pounds in tuition costs. For just a few weeks of your time and a couple of thousand pounds or so in total, you can get the training you need to be a successful HGV driver.
Where the HGV theory test is concerned, you can begin preparing as soon as you file your provisional entitlement paperwork. Your entitlement should arrive in the mail in about ten business days. You will then be eligible to book and take the theory test as soon as you are ready. Practically speaking, you could have this first part of the process done in about two weeks. Then it’s a matter of undergoing practical skills training at one of our facilities. A few weeks later you can be ready to book your practical skills test.
Students who work hard and apply themselves can begin looking for work, with licence in hand, in under three months. Simply put, HGV training is a fast track to getting your career under way. The sooner you get started, the sooner you will be working.
If you have any additional questions about the HGV theory test or training in general, do not hesitate to contact us. We are the nation’s leading provider of HGV training with more than four-dozen facilities across the country.
