The driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a qualification that has been adopted by many European countries since September 2010. The qualification is meant to serve as a professional qualification that that gives license bus, HGV and coach drivers. The qualification is meant to give professionalism to the industry. The purpose of the qualification is to improve the safety of roads and drivers by implementing safety rules and procedures.

Before a driver can get the CPC certification, there is a need for a 35 hours training by JAUPT approved training centre.

Many people have been asking if the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Brexit) will have a significant effect on the CPC. Many have speculated that the CPC will now be scrapped and it is no longer important or valid. Nothing can be farther from the truth. The United Kingdom was a joint signatory with other European countries to the AETR which was an agreement that was meant to give standards on vehicles and drivers in international road transport.

The United Kingdom can only stop the CPC if it withdraws its signature from the AETR. But this is not going to happen because a signatory to the AETR is required if the United Kingdom wants to trade in the European Union Countries. Therefore, all the speculation about cancelling the CPC is false. The CPC is part of a larger body of regulations that the UK will continue to be a signatory to.

A September 11, 2019 deadline has been set for the enlistment of all lorry, coach and bus drivers to get the CPC certification. The deadline might seem far away, but many people will want to leave the certification until the deadline is close by. The rumour of cancellation of CPC will even make more people undecided about it.

But that’s a risky venture. As stated before, there is a need for 35 hours training before the certification can be given. If you fail to get the required hours, you won’t be certified. JAUPT approved centres are getting smaller, therefore as the deadline approaches, the traffic increase and the rush will prevent you from getting the certification.

What’s the consequence? If you miss out on the certification, you will not be permitted to drive professionally in the United Kingdom or any other EU country. This will be a dent on your professional career and for the organizations you serve.

As long as the UK is a signatory to the AETR, you can’t afford to get the CPC certification.
